"In the style of American paper-boys, Papergirl distributes rolled art pieces by bicycle to passers-by. Giving the work out by bike means that there is no time for any stereotypes when choosing recipients of the pieces. You have to react fast and spontaneously. Chance plays its part."
Why are we telling you this? Because this year Surgery7 will be one of the 50 featured artists taking part in PaperGirl, Manchester!
So, calling all Mancunians! Take a stroll down to Soup Kitchen on Wednesday, June 15 - 6-11:30pm and see the art at the launch of the PaperGirl Mcr exhibition. There you’ll be able to set your eyes on one of a kind illustrations, photography, designs, screen prints and zines from 50 local and international artists.
If we weren’t 10563 miles away, we’d already be waiting at the doors!
Cover Lovers #4
Changing My Mind by Zadie Smith
The Cover: British novelist Zadie Smith meets UK leading illustrator Si Scott. What else is there to say besides… Brilliant.
P.s. Mini Q&A with Si about his book cover design for Zadie.
The Book: If you love her fiction, you will enjoy the fact that Smith’s voice is just as funny, insightful, unaffected and wise in her non-fiction essays. In this, which covers everything from the joys of reading Nabokov to Italian cinema, from the conditions of life in Liberia to her own relationship with her family and father, the reader gets to know aspects of her as a person, not merely as an author. It is instantly clear that she is not merely a dazzling writer, but an incredible human being, as well as a fine journalist and reviewer.
Cover Lovers #3
The Kingdom of Ohio by Matthew Flaming
The Cover: Typography caught our eye with this gothic-esque design. An elegant black cover accompanied with a timely medieval font. But what sent us head over heels in love with this book was the spot UV treatment used on the typeface as well as the decorative ornament border stamped in gold foil. This cover made us feel many things… especially the urge to go out and buy a pocket watch.
The Book: The Kingdom of Ohiois a fast paced adventure that incorporates both science fiction and historical fiction. It is a story about high ideals, social responsibility, Hugh Everett’s theory of Relative State Formulation, love, and the human condition. Flaming engages the reader with fascinating characters, creative scenarios, and footnotes that spark a flurry of research into US history.
"ART SUCKS… people in and will be a core value"
p.s. we were standing there for a while…
In celebration of World Book Day, we’re super excited to bring you: COVER LOVERS
Despite the saying “Never judge a book by it’s cover”, we feel that it’s time to come clean and admit (again) that we totally do! We can’t help it. We’ve tried to resist the covers that catch our eye but to our weakness, we fail.
But having said that, we also must put forward that there’s no shame in doing this. In our research and of course from personal experience, we’ve learnt that: “The average person spends 8 seconds looking at the front cover and 15 seconds on the back. It is a fact, that the front cover of a book is what draws the initial attention from the buyer, if they don’t like the cover, they won’t look any closer at the book.”
Over the years we’ve come to fully understand the importance of a book cover design. Whether or not you’re interested in the content of the book itself but you’ve found yourself head over heels in love with the cover, there’s a good chance you’ll buy it (well, we do anyway). And if that cover makes you want to read the book, then that’s a cover well done!
We take pride in knowing that our bookshelf isn’t just a home for books to be neatly placed but instead a pine crafted case that holds pieces of carefully thought out artworks. It’s a place that we’ve built from the shelf up - full of the things we’re attracted to and visually love. Somewhere we can revert back to if we need some inspiration or just a fresh perspective.
And with that, we’ve decided to start sharing our love with you! Every week we’re going to aim super hard to post up all the covers that have pulled us in & made our hearts flutter. Along with links on where to buy these books. (Two words: FREE SHIPPING!)
Our reasons for doing this is 3-fold:
1. To open your eyes to the bright & beautiful world of book cover design.
2. To share with you what we see and what we love.
And most importantly,
3. To encourage you to read!
You’ll never find us without a book sitting on our bed-side table. When we’re able to step away from our busy little worlds, we always make the time to escape within the pages of a good book. If you see a cover that draws you in, making you want to pick up a book and take it home with you, then we couldn’t be happier! As self proclaimed book worms, we feel that the encouragement of reading is super important and much needed. Kindle or not (we prefer not. shh.), we want you to get those eyes scanning all the word-filled pages this planet has to offer!
Big hearts from your cover lovers,
A1 sized poster we grabbed for £8 when we visited the Design Museum in London back in early 2010! It was a good day. Rainy, but good.
